All Barrie businesses/institutions (defined as Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional properties in the Waste Management By-law) must register to receive curbside waste collection services from the City. Owners/designated property managers of all property types (residential, business, institutional, or mixed-use) within the downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA) must also register to receive waste collection services.
Why Registration is Required for Service
The transition to automated cart collection effective September 8, 2025, included:
- a new waste collection program for business and institutional properties. Organics collection and new waste collection limits were introduced, and property owners or authorized managers became solely responsible for the registration and management of municipal waste collection service. Business and institutional properties must be registered so the City can identify which properties are opting into the City’s municipal waste services. Municipal waste services are generally suited for small business and institutional properties with limited waste, which can be collected on residential routes. Larger business and institutional properties with multiple units (ex. complexes and plazas) often require front-end dumpsters, not curbside collection.
- meeting the needs of properties within Barrie’s downtown BIA, a dense urban area that requires working through the unique layout of each property. Registering with the City ensures the individual needs of each downtown property requesting municipal waste service are considered and facilitates the delivery of carts. Owners are solely responsible for the registration and management of municipal services for their property(ies) within the BIA.
How to Register for Curbside Waste Collection
Property owners or authorized managers (owners) are solely responsible for the registration and management of municipal waste collection services allocated to their property. Automated carts are assigned to the property, NOT to individual units. Tenants of business and institutional properties must contact the property owner or authorized manager to discuss their waste collection needs.
Property owner information including email, phone number, roll number (found on your property tax bill) are required to confirm registration and municipal service details. The online application should take 5–10 minutes to complete.

March 31, 2025, was the deadline for guaranteed onboarding before the new cart-based service began on September 8, 2025. Any property owners/managers who register now may not receive carts until October. During the interim period, unregistered properties are responsible for managing their own waste at their own expense.
