Project #
EN1168
Status
In Progress
Estimated Completion
2026

The City is undertaking the replacement of the Dyments Creek culvert at the Sanford Street crossing and completing watercourse improvements from Sanford Street downstream to Bradford Street.

Project Updates

January 5, 2026

The project has encountered some unforeseen delays. The road remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians at Dyments Creek.

The contractor has returned to site and will continue operations. They will be installing new retaining walls at the four corners of the culvert. Following the retaining wall installation, the contractor will backfill the new culvert.

Winter maintenance on Sanford Street sidewalks and road between John and Brock will continue to be provided by a combined effort between City of Barrie and Leading Edge Earthworks crews.

For any concerns, please reach out to the contacts on this page.

Project Features

The project objectives include:

  • Culvert Replacement: Replace the deteriorated and hydraulically deficient twin corrugated steel pipe culverts on Sanford Street with a 6.0-meter span precast concrete box culvert. This new culvert will be capable of conveying 50-year storm flood events.
  • Creek Channel Rehabilitation: Rehabilitate and regrade the creek channel between the Sanford Street culvert crossing and the Bradford Street culvert crossing (upstream end). This will improve flow conveyance and channel performance by incorporating natural channel design features.
  • Watermain Extension: Extend the existing watermain on Sanford Street on either side of the culvert crossing. This extension will enhance operations and provide redundancy to the water distribution system.
  • Stormwater Quality Control: Implement stormwater quality control treatment on Sanford Street to remove contaminants before drainage discharge into Dyments Creek.

Project Information Meeting

A drop-in Project Information Meeting was held on Thursday, March 27, 2025, 5–7:30pm at City Hall (70 Collier Street). A meeting notice was distributed to nearby residents and the meeting was added to the community events calendar. The meeting included information boards, and provided an opportunity to learn about the project and discuss any questions or concerns. A comment sheet was open until April 18, 2025, for those who were unable to attend.

Traffic Impacts

The project will be staged to minimize the disruption to residents, however, a temporary road closure that will prohibit through traffic (vehicle and pedestrian) will be required during construction.

Properties impacted by construction will have temporary accesses constructed to allow for driveway access.
