Geographic Information Systems

GIS provides residents, visitors, business owners and investors a means to easily find, access and view information through the use of maps and mapping technology.

Here you will find available maps for viewing, Open GIS Data Portal and Discover Barrie, an online interactive mapping tool that allows users to search for addresses or parks, find the nearest bus stop or park, identify their garbage collection area or see the city through aerial imagery.

What is GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide the means to represent, analyze, describe and interpret information allowing for better decision making, more effective means to manage assets, improve communication through visual tools, and improve productivity by leveraging technology and self-service tools such as Discover Barrie.

How does the City use GIS?

The City's GIS Vision is “We will build GIS into everything we do to effectively manage our City." GIS plays an integral role in City planning, building and development, asset management, infrastructure design and renewal, fire dispatching, capital project planning, identifying infrastructure locations, municipal elections, property assessments, and much more.

GIS provides self-service tools such as Discover Barrie, a GIS interactive web map, to empower users to find relevant information when and where they need. Discover Barrie is available to residents, developers, business owners and members of the public allowing them to find information about wards and councillors, waste collection, zoning, parking, snow removal, parks, points of interest, and much more.

The Open GIS Data Portal enables the user to freely download spatial data to leverage for their own needs without restrictions or limitations. Open GIS is data that can be freely used, re-used and redistributed by anyone, anytime and anywhere.
