Energy & Greenhouse Gas Management

The City works to align planning functions with energy impacts in order to help build a more energy-efficient community, and encourages you to work towards conserving your personal energy use.

Corporate Energy Management

In 2025, the Corporation of the City of Barrie spent approximately $8.2 million on utilities to support municipal operations, including facilities, parks, and water and wastewater infrastructure. The City’s Energy Management Branch works to reduce energy and water consumption across these operations to help manage costs, improve efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This work is guided by the Council-adopted Conservation & Demand Management Plan, which provides a framework for conserving energy and water throughout municipal operations. The Energy Management Branch also led the development of the City’s Corporate Net-Zero Strategy, a roadmap that supports departments across the organization in reducing emissions and achieving net-zero corporate operations by 2050.

Energy & GHG Management Milestones

For more than 10 years, the City has worked to manage energy use and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its own operations. This includes improving the performance of City buildings, infrastructure, and fleet vehicles, while finding ways to lower utility use, reduce costs, and support cleaner operations. Over time, the City has introduced plans, programs, and projects that help make municipal services more efficient and less carbon intensive. The milestones below highlight key moments in the City’s corporate energy and GHG management journey.

Corporate Facilities & Fleet Energy Costs

Energy plays an important role in delivering City services every day. From buildings and lighting to water systems and fleet operations, municipal services rely on energy to keep things running. Energy costs can change over time, which is why energy management matters. By tracking energy use and costs, the City can identify opportunities to improve efficiency, manage expenses, and support more sustainable operations.

Household Energy Conservation Tips

Energy consumption from fossil fuels (oil, natural gas and coal) is directly related to the creation of greenhouse gases. By reducing your energy consumption, you can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save money on your energy bill. Consumption consists of two components: the amount of energy the device uses when turned on, and the amount of time the device is on.

Did you know? Appliances use approximately 15% of the energy consumed in our homes.
