Household hazardous waste materials are also accepted during the above hours at the Recycling Depot at the landfill site, open seasonally.
Hazardous materials are substances that are flammable, corrosive, toxic/poisonous or explosive. When these materials are improperly disposed of through the sanitary sewer system (by way of household drains such as the kitchen or laundry room sinks), they do not receive the treatment necessary to diffuse their environmental impact and are discharged into Kempenfelt Bay, affecting plant and animal species as well as water quality and, ultimately, public health.

Storing Hazardous Waste Before Disposal
Barrie residents can pick up an orange box free of charge at the Recycling Depot and the Waste & Recycling Depot, located at the landfill site. You can use the orange box to collect and store your household hazardous waste materials before bringing it to the HHWF for disposal. Do not place orange boxes curbside; they will not be collected. Orange boxes are available for Barrie residents only. Only residential materials are accepted in the boxes. Maximum 25 litre disposal per visit.
Tips for storing your orange box (and contents) safely:
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
- Do not pour material into the box
- Do not mix materials together
- Materials must remain in their original container or be clearly labelled
- Containers must be secured with a lid (place in box when you are ready to transport)
