This year’s Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) campaign, October 5-11, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” works to educate everyone about using these batteries safely. The campaign stresses how important it is to BUY, CHARGE, and RECYCLE safely when it comes to lithium-ion batteries.
Did you know? Most of the electronics we use in our homes every day are powered by lithium-ion batteries. In fact, almost everything that’s rechargeable uses this kind of battery.

The History of Fire Prevention Week
Since 1922, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week–a week where everyone can learn how to stay safe in case of a fire.
FPW was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. Learn more about the history of FPW.
