In 2025, the City of Barrie underwent a comprehensive review of its ward boundaries. This review was conducted by Watson & Associates Economists Ltd. to help City Council decide whether to keep the ward structure or adopt a new one. The Ward Boundary By-law was passed on June 18, 2025 and the notice of the passing of a by-law was issued on June 19, 2025. The new ward boundaries will be used for the upcoming Municipal Election and will take effect with the new term of Council.
Barrie's population has been steadily increasing, with the 2021 census reporting approximately 153,000 residents, a nearly 12% increase since the last ward boundary review. This growth necessitated a review to ensure the ward boundaries continue to provide equitable representation.
