A detached accessory dwelling unit (DADU), also referred to as a secondary dwelling, is a type of additional residential unit and is permitted in lands designated Neighbourhood Area.​

The City's Second Suite Registration By-law (PDF) requires detached accessory dwelling units to be registered with the City. ​​This ensures all relevant agencies and City departments, including Barrie Fire and Emergency Service​, are aware of the additional units on the property.
