Council & Committees

City Council

Council is the policy-forming and decision making body of the City of Barrie. It is comprised of the Mayor and 10 Councillors (representing 10 wards) who are each elected for a four-year term. Regular meetings of City Council are held every other Monday at 7:00 p.m. (except during July), unless otherwise specified by resolution of Council and except when Monday is a holiday. Meetings are telecast live by Rogers Television. Formal channels to communicate with City Council include Circulation List and Deputations.

General Committee

Barrie City Council has one standing committee, General Committee, comprised of all members of Council. The Mayor presides as Chair. General Committee meetings occur every other Monday (alternating with Council meetings) and start at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are telecast live by Rogers Television.

General Committee duties include studying and reporting to Council on all matters brought to it by reference committees. General Committee acts in the place of Council to conduct public meetings concerning Planning applications. Formal channels to communicate with General Committee include Circulation List and Public Meetings.

Reference Committees

City Council has two reference committees, which report to Council when required within the terms of their mandates. Formal channels to communicate with reference committees include Circulation List and Open Delegations.

Advisory Committees

Council has also established a number of advisory committees to provide feedback on specific areas of interest. These committees report to a Reference Committee and meet on a monthly basis, or at the call of the Chair.
