Environmental Education Centre

The Environmental Education Centre was designed to provide a place to educate about Barrie’s waste management programs through play-based learning activities. The Environmental Education Centre is located at the Barrie Landfill. It is open from the beginning of May until the end of September.

Programs On Hold Until 2023

Due to budgetary and resourcing challenges associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic recovery, education and outreach programs linked with solid waste, recycling and compost operations are currently on hold. We intend to resume these programs in the second half of 2023.

Free Learning Workshops

The City of Barrie provides workshops to local school classes and groups. Teaching children about environmental initiatives can help them learn life-long lessons about environmental responsibility. Information is provided in a fun and interactive setting that can be customized to appeal to the age range of your group. Presentations are also available for adult groups.

Workshops are approximately 50 to 60 minutes in length. Workshop themes include:

  • vericomposting (worm composting)
  • planting with compost
  • the problem with plastics and the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle).

Groups must choose one workshop theme.
