The City’s 2024 Waste Collection Calendar will be delivered to Barrie households this week.

Residents and businesses can expect many changes coming to Barrie’s curbside waste collection program over the next few years.

Downtown Barrie is once again the place to be to ring in the New Year. This year’s free, family-friendly Downtown Countdown celebration on December 31 will feature rock band Big Wreck as the headliner and Sonshine and Broccoli as the children’s performer.

The winners of the 5th Mayor’s Innovation Awards were announced this evening via a virtual ceremony that premiered on the City’s social media channels, and the nominees, runners-up and winners were celebrated at an awards ceremony at the Sandbox Centre.

Yesterday, Mayor Nuttall submitted the City of Barrie’s recommendations on the Official Plan to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. The City’s submission includes feedback received from the public by email and at a Town Hall meeting on November 22, 2023.

Following several amendments to the proposed 2024 Business Plan and Budget, Council has approved the City’s portion of the 2024 Budget. City Council froze spending on the City’s Operating Budget for the second year, while continuing the contribution of 2 per cent for the Infrastructure Investment Funding levy. The funding is used to replace and renew roads, stormwater infrastructure and buildings.

Next week, the City of Barrie’s Affordability Committee will hold a public planning meeting to consider changing the current zoning by-law to allow up to four dwelling units on residentially-zoned parcels of land.

Barrie residents’ hangtag waterfront parking passes will expire at the end of the year, and residents are encouraged to replace their hangtag pass with a free digital permit to continue to park for free at select waterfront locations.

The City of Barrie is now accepting applications for the 2024 Arts & Culture Investment Program. This program strengthens Barrie’s arts and culture community through strategic investments in the work of not-for-profit arts and culture organizations.

Support local downtown Barrie businesses this holiday season and enjoy free parking in all on-street spaces throughout December. Standard parking fees apply in municipal lots and the Collier Street Parkade.
