Curbside Collection Carts

The City moved to automated cart collection service as outlined below on September 8, 2025. Automated collection is when the driver uses a mechanical arm on the side of the truck to lift and empty carts, without exiting the vehicle. This requires specific carts. Automated cart collection:

  • supports worker health and safety by removing heavy lifting.
  • is more efficient compared to manual collection, so fewer resources are needed on the road.
  • doesn't require heavy lifting or dragging to place curbside, as wheeled carts are easy to roll.
  • helps keep neighbourhoods cleaner by keeping waste contained and protected against wind and animals. The organics cart is equipped with a gravity lock to secure material and keep out wildlife; the lock opens automatically when the cart is dumped into the collection vehicle (to lock it, turn the dial on the top left or right to the ‘lock’ position. If it doesn't lock properly, lift the lid and shut the lid hard while the dial is in the lock position).

Carts by Property Type

The City of Barrie collects yard waste manually. Residential recycling carts are not provided by the City because Circular Materials manages residential recycling under the provincial Blue Box Regulation; their contractor collects recycling in blue/grey bins, but they might make changes to the way they collect recycling in the future.

Cart Limits per Property

Residential property cart quantities are based on the number of residential dwelling units. Business/institutional properties are limited to one garbage cart, one organics cart, and one mixed recycling cart per property (not per unit).

MPAC and the City’s Second Suite Registration information are used to confirm number of residential dwelling units.

Mixed-use properties are eligible for a maximum of 3 sets of residential carts and 1 set of business/institutional carts (limits apply). Residential units and business/institutional units cannot share carts. Waste generated from residential and business/institutional units must be disposed in their respective carts.

Small Boarding Lodging & Rooming (BLR) Houses are limited to 1 garbage and 1 organics cart; large BLR houses are limited to 2 garbage and 2 organics carts.

Properties with 6+ residential dwelling units are eligible for municipal centralized collection services (organics and garbage collection). Property owners/designated managers of residential properties with 6+ residential units must email Environmental.Sustainability@barrie.ca with their contact information to discuss municipal servicing options (organics and garbage collection).

How to get Carts

Carts were delivered throughout summer 2025. If you did not receive your carts, please contact Service Barrie at 705-726-4242 or ServiceBarrie@barrie.ca. Please note:

Cart Ownership

Carts belong to the City of Barrie and are to remain with the property to which they are assigned. Carts are assigned to the property address and equipped with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag and a unique serial number linked to the property. All collection trucks are equipped with a RFID reader and onboard computer that can help ensure carts stay with the correct property.

Proper Cart Storage

Residents and business/institutional property owners are responsible for the storage, care, cleanliness, security and use of carts. If space is tight or you don’t have a garage, you can store the carts in your backyard, against the side or front of your house, or on the front porch—as long as it’s within your property boundary. Please note:

  • Carts cannot be stored on a public boulevard, road or sidewalk.
  • The gravity locking system on the organics cart protects waste from animals and weather. A shady storage location helps control odours in summer months.

The Yard Maintenance By-law was updated in 2025 to allow carts to be stored in the front or side yard if needed (previously prohibited for properties with a garage or backyard). Where possible, carts should be stored in the garage or backyard. Per the by-law, waste containers must be kept in a manner that prevents animals from getting into the container causing waste to escape. Carts must also be kept clean and free of odours and pest infestations.

Setting your Carts at the Curb

Remember to properly sort your waste for collection.

Roll your organics and garbage carts to the curb by 7am (4:30am in the downtown BIA) according to your property's collection schedule. When placing materials curbside, remember to:

  • place carts on a level surface, with the arrows on the lid pointing toward the street.
  • place carts so they do not block bike lanes or sidewalks. On collection day, carts may be placed on the boulevard and/or the driveway.
  • allow for 2 ft of clearance between each cart and from other waste materials set out for collection.* This gives the arms on the truck the room needed to pick up the carts.
  • allow for 2 ft of clearance from any obstacles such as parked cars, fences, trees, snowbanks etc. This gives the arms on the truck the room needed to pick up the carts.
  • place residential blue/grey recycling boxes (if applicable) and yard waste at least 2 ft from the carts.
  • make sure cart lids are fully closed. Do not overfill your cart.

Please note the contractor makes every effort to collect carts, and any missed collections are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Trucks are equipped with technology that can be reviewed to assist with investigating concerns.

*Carts do not have to be spaced apart when set out for collection in the downtown Business Improvement Area, unlike other areas of the city. Each property in the BIA is unique; please confirm your specific setout location with the property owner/manager or by emailing Environmental.Sustainability@barrie.ca.
